a karstic cave in the USA, in the Flint Ridge region of the Mississippian Plateau, in Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The Flint Ridge Cave System was formed by the dissolution of the limestones of a coal formation. Until 1972, it was the world’s largest cave in terms of the total length of all passageways and halls (as of 1970, 121 km). In 1972 a connection between the Flint Ridge system and neighboring Mammoth Cave was discovered. As of 1973, the combined system, which is sometimes called the Mammoth System, was 233 km long.
