Drebbel, Cornelis Jacobszoon
(kôrnā`lĭs yä`kôpsōn drĕb`əl), 1572–1634, Dutch inventor, physicist, and mechanician. His major inventions were an atmospherically driven clock and the first navigable submarinesubmarine,naval craft capable of operating for an extended period of time underwater. Submarines are almost always warships, although a few are used for scientific, business, or other purposes (see also submersible).
