Confalonieri, Count Federigo

Born Oct. 6, 1785, in Milan; died Dec. 10, 1846, in Hospenthal, Uri Canton, Switzerland. One of the leaders of the patriotic movement of the bourgeoisie and nobility in the Lombardy-Venice region that resisted French (up to 1814) and later Austrian domination. From 1818 he headed the secret society known as the Italian Federation, which attempted to liberate Lombardy-Venice from Austrian rule and create a constitutional monarchy in northern Italy. Arrested in 1821, he was held prisoner in the Austrian fortress of Spielberg from 1824 to 1836.
