a department in Colombia. Area, 47,200 sq km. Population, 202,000 (1973). The capital is Quibdó. Livestock is raised on pastureland, and fields are cultivated to aid animal husbandry. Gold, silver, and platinum are mined in Chocó. Industry includes sawmilling. Banana plantations are found near the Gulf of Urabá.
