boil order

An advisory issued by a water system operator (usually a town or city) stating that the drinking water may have been contaminated by potentially pathogenic bacteria and must be boiled (at a rolling boil of at least one minute) by the end user.
Boil order triggers
• Compromised well or spring supplying the system.
• Compromised pipelines or water tank.
• Cross-connection or back-siphonage event caused contaminated water to enter the water system.
• Contamination found during routine water testing.
