Dampier Land

 

a lowland peninsula in northwestern Australia between Roebuck Bay on the west and King Sound on the east. Area, approximately 15,000 sq km. Xerophytic acacia bushes and sparse grass cover its sandy soil; the east is a typical savanna on alluvial soil. The principal occupation is sheep herding. The port of Broome is on the peninsula’s west coast. It was named in honor of W. Dampier.
