Counterapproaches

from the 17th to the early 20th century, defensive structures erected by besieged troops to counter the movement of the attacking enemy toward the positions defended (fortress walls and forts) along covered passages (”approaches”). They were communications trenches that were laid out to meet the approaches of the attacking enemy.
