Cape of Good Hope

(also Cape of Storms; in Portuguese, Cabo das Tormentas), a rocky cape in southern Africa at 34° 21’ S lat. and 18° 30’ E long. The cape was first reached in 1488 by the Portuguese navigator B. Diaz, who named it Cape of Storms (Stormy Cape). The Portuguese king, John II, renamed it Cape of Good Hope (referring to the hope of reaching India from there).
