Dispersed Formation

an infantry subunit, or group, formation extended out along a front, used in offensive combat in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The dispersed formation was introduced in the Russian Army by P. A. Rumiantsev and, with some changes, continued in use until the early 20th century, when the skirmish formation was introduced.
