Counihan, Noel
Counihan, Noel
Born in 1913 in Melbourne. Australian painter and graphic artist.
In addition to drawings for Communist newspapers (including satirical drawings) and linocuts (the series The Miners, 1946; the album Peace or War, 1950; and the series Linocuts, 1959), Couni-han executed dramatic paintings devoted to the life and struggle of the working people of Australia (In the Beginning of March, 1932, 1940’s, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). In the 1960’s his works became more generalized and expressive; these works are devoted to the Australian aborigines and the denunciation of imperialist aggression and the bourgeois way of life.
