Electric Ophthalmia
Electric Ophthalmia
an eye disorder caused by fairly long and intensive exposure to ultraviolet or other rays during electric or gas welding, motion-picture filming, and so on. It is manifested by hyperemia and edema of the conjunctiva, tearing, photophobia, and blepharospasm. Involvement of the cornea gives rise to petechial infiltrates, for example, opacifications and superficial detachment of epithelium. Electric ophthalmia can be prevented by wearing goggles with special light filters.
