endoscopic air pulse stimulation

endoscopic air pulse stimulation

A test of the integrity of the sensory nerves of the larynx used in patients suspected of having swallowing disorders. It consists of delivering incrementally more powerful blasts of air to the hypopharynx to measure how much stimulation is required to trigger reflex movement of the laryngeal adductor muscle, closing the vocal folds. The test is used during fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing (FEESST).
