Bobrzynski, Michal

Born Sept. 30, 1849, in Kraków; died July 3, 1935, in Poznań. Polish historian and political figure.

In 1872, Bobrzynski graduated from the law department of the Jagellonian University in Kraków and became a professor there in 1877. He was a representative of the conservative trend in Polish bourgeois historical scholarship, and he provided a synthesized exposition of these views on Polish history in An Outline History of Poland (1879; Russian translation, vols. 1–2, 1888). From 1885 to 1891, Bobrzynski was a deputy to the Galician Sejm (diet) and the Austrian Reichsrat; he was one of the leaders of the “Stanczyk” group. During the period 1908–13 he was vicegerent of Galicia, and in 1917 minister of the Austrian government for Galician affairs. Bobrzynski conducted a policy of loyalty to Hapsburg Austro-Hungary and rejection of the national liberation struggle.
