chip detector chip detector A device to detect the presence of metallic particles and to gather them from a given fluid, normally lubrication oil. These are small plugs that are magnetic and attract the ferrite-based metal particles that may be in lubricating oil. By examining the chip detectors, the health of the engine can be ascertained. Electronic chip detectors provide an alert in the cockpit when chips are present on the magnetic plug. |
