BN object

BN object

short for Becklin-Neugebauer object. A pointlike infrared source in the Orion molecular cloud (OMC-1). It is thought to be a young B0 or B1 star, surrounded by a compact H II region and an expanding dust envelope characterized by a strong stellar wind. The infrared luminosity of the dust is about a thousand times the Sun's luminosity at a temperature of about 600 K. The object is still above the main sequence and evolving toward it, and may represent the earliest phase of stellar evolution that has so far been identified.
