 [der″mah-tog´rah-fizm] urticaria due to physical allergy in which a pale, raised welt or wheal with a red flare on each side is elicited by stroking or scratching the skin with a dull instrument. adj., adj dermatograph´ic.

(der'mă-tog'ră-fizm), A form of urticaria in which whealing occurs in the site and in the configuration of application of stroking (pressure, friction) of the skin. The resulting white line response appears early in flares of atopic dermatitis. Synonym(s): autographism, factitious urticaria, skin writing [dermato- + G. graphō, to write]
