Asheim, Lester Eugene

(1914– ) library educator; born in Spokane, Wash. A graduate of the University of Chicago, he became a recognized leader in library education and academic and intellectual freedom. He served as dean of the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago before becoming director of the American Library Association's Office for Library Education, where he was known for his expertise in personnel development. He later joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina where he made significant curriculum changes and inaugurated a doctoral program in library science.
