Disko (dĭs`kō), island, 3,312 sq mi (8,578 sq km), in the Davis Strait off W Greenland. It is mountainous (rising to 6,296 ft/1,919 m) and partly glaciated. Telluric iron and lignite have been found there. Qeqertarsuaq, the island's chief town, is on the southern shore. In Disko Bay to the south are some of the world's largest shrimp beds. Disko was first reached (c.985) by Eric the Red.Disko the largest island off the western shore of Greenland. It belongs to Denmark. Area, 8,600 sq km. The civilian population is about 500. The island is a dissected plateau made up mostly of basalt; it reaches an elevation of 1,919 m. One-fifth of the island is covered with glaciers. In the south is the port of Godhavn. Brown coal and iron are mined there. It was first visited by Eric the Red (Thorvaldson), the Norwegian Viking, between 982 and 985. |
