Cotton sled

Cotton sled

One case when cotton was not handpicked occurred if an inopportune freeze from an early frost or late cotton planting caught a cotton patch full of unopened Bolls (seedpods). After the freeze, they would not open and the price offered by the gin was greatly reduced. Thus, little labor to gather the bolls was warranted, but one quick and inexpensive way to salvage them was by dragging a sled, which had a V built into the front of it, along the row of stalks. The bolls were caught in the V, pulled off (stripped), and collected.
