(Kirin), a city in northeast China, in Kirin Province, on the Sungari River. Population, 568,000 (1957). It is a railroad junction and an important river port. Two bridges cross the river here. It has a chemical industry, which produces dyes, calcium carbide, nitrogen fertilizers, cellulose, and motion picture film. Woodworking, paper milling, food processing, and the production of iron alloys are also important. A steam electric power station and the Fengman hydroelectric power plant are located here as well. Chilin was established in 1673.
