FargoFargo,city (1990 pop. 74,111), seat of Cass co., E N.Dak., at the head of navigation on the Red River, opposite Moorhead, Minn.; inc. 1875. A railroad hub and regional financial and medical center, Fargo is also the trade and distribution center of a spring-wheat and livestock region. Manufactures include computer software, farm tools, agricultural products, and transportation equipment. The city was founded (1871) with the coming of the Northern Pacific RR and named for William G. FargoFargo, William George,1818–81, American pioneer expressman, b. Pompey, N.Y.
