Farghani, Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Kathir Al-

 

(Latinized name, Alfraganus). A ninth-century Middle Asian astronomer.

Al-Farghani’s treatise A Book on Celestial Motions and a Compendium of the Sciences of the Stars is a concise encyclopedia of the astronomical knowledge of his time. The treatise became known in Europe through a translation from Arabic to Latin in the 12th century and through translations into other European languages in the 13th century. The treatise was first printed in 1493 in Ferrara.
