(dah-kōs'tă sin'drōm) Onset of nausea, vomiting, headache, mood changes, and insomnia occurring several hours to days after ascent to a higher altitude, with pulmonary and cerebral edema; death ensues in severe cases. Caused by hypoxia with increased ventilation rate and resulting respiratory alkalosis.
