a river in the southeastern Kamchatka Peninsula. Taking its source in Avachinskoe Lake, the river empties into Avacha Bay on the Pacific, forming a delta. The river is 122 km long, and its basin’s area is 5,090 sq km. Fed by snow, rain, subsoil, and glacial waters, the Avacha flows at approximately 136 cu m/sec. It begins freezing at the mouth in November and is frozen over by late December; the ice breaks in March. Ice floes block the river in winter. There are hot and cold mineral springs in the river’s basin.
