The loss of subcutaneous fat from the face, arms, and legs, and its redistribution to the abdomen, back, and visceral organs. It gives the face an unusually defined or drawn appearance. The syndrome occurs in about half of all patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV/AIDs. Synonym: facial lipodystrophy syndrome
