Translations

First World

First World

A term for the most highly developed nations. It may be applied to any member of the OECD, though its usage is somewhat archaic. Originally, the term referred to the allies of the United States during the Cold War. The term still is still sometimes associated with the Cold War and has some negative connotations. As a result, so-called First World nations frequently are called developed nations. See also: OECD.
