Enderby LandEnderby LandEnderby Landpart of Eastern Antarctica, lying between approximately 45° and 57° E long. The ice sheet, which in the central part of Enderby Land is 2,000–2,500 m in elevation, is 3,000 m thick. There are ice-free sections along the coast, and in the east there are sizable mountain massifs that reach an elevation of about 2,300 m. Enderby Land has undergone intensive research by Soviet antarctic expeditions. A new Soviet scientific station, Molodezhnaia, was established on the coast in 1963; it was reorganized as the Antarctic Meteorological Center in 1971. Enderby Land was discovered in 1831 by a British whaling expedition under J. Biscoe and named in honor of the owners of the firm that financed the expedition. Enderby Land
