[′bläk ‚sȯrt] (computer science) A method of sorting a file, usually with punched card sorters, in which the file is first sorted according to the value of the digit in the highest digit position of the key; the resulting collections of records can next be sorted independently in smaller operations, and the separate sections then joined.
