Block Positioner

A dealer who buys large numbers of securities from an investor in hopes of profiting from future, positive price movements. Block positioners usually use short sales and other hedging strategies to reduce the risk associated with their long positions. They must register with the SEC.

A securities dealer who is willing to take a large long or short position in a stock or bond. The block positioner expects to profit on a position by selling at a price higher than the one at which the block was purchased but will often hedge by using arbitrage or options.
