Corundum Refractory Products

Corundum Refractory Products

articles that contain more than 90 percent Al2O3 and are made from industrial alumina and from grog and electric-smelted corundum, which are prepared from it, as well as from pure or enriched natural minerals such as gibbsite and diaspore.

Corundum refractory products are made either by molding from powder mixtures in presses, with subsequent roasting at 1700°-1800°C, or by smelting in electric arc furnaces and casting. Their main properties are refractoriness to 1900°-2050°C, high strength, and good slag resistance. The products are used in heating plants at 1500°C and higher, in equipment of the chemical industry, and in steel pouring; smelted corundum refractory products are used in glassmaking and heating furnaces. Baked corundum refractory products with less than 1 percent porosity are prepared for use in corrosive mediums and in laboratory work; lightweight products with an apparent density of 600–1,500 kg/m3 are used as high-temperature insulation.
