[dē‚fleg′mā·shən] (chemical engineering) In a distillation operation, the partial condensation of vapor to form a liquid richer in higher boiling constituents than the original vapor.

Dephlegmation

partial condensation of mixtures of various vapors and gases in order to enrich them with low-boiling components. It is based on the primary condensation of high-boiling components upon cooling and is a variety of reflux fractional condensation.

Dephlegmation is used as an intermediate phase during the separation of gas mixtures, as well as during the processes of distillation and rectification. It is used independently during the separation of gas mixtures with components having significantly different condensation temperatures.
