Dependent Student

A post-secondary student in the United States who does not earn income sufficient to be an independent student. A dependent student must report parental income on his/her FAFSA when attempting to qualify for federal financial aid. In other words, because there is no way a dependent student has enough income to pay for his/her education, the government considers the possibility that his/her parents may be able to do so.
