disconnection syndrome

dis·con·nec·tion syn·drome

general term for various neurologic disorders (for example, transcortical dysphasia) due to interruption of various association pathways located in either one cerebral hemisphere or linking both.
Neurology A general term for a cortical 'disconnect' between two regions of the brain, one of which involves the cortex. The disconnection may be horizontal, as in the corticocortical disconnection syndrome described by Geshwind, or vertical, which involves a disruption of the long myelinated pathway from the upper brain stem projecting into the cortex, described by Christiansen and Uzzell as a reticulofrontal disconnection syndrome, which in their patient was characterised by disinhibition, loss of interest in all things that had previously been important to the patient, and lack of insight
