Special Features:Drained by the Blackwater River and its tributaries, Canaan Valley comprises one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the Appalachians. The area contains 40 distinct plant communities with more than 580 plant species. These habitats support equally diverse wildlife populations--290 species of vertebrates have been observed.
Habitats: 15,245 acres including wet soils, forests, shrub lands, open lands. Eventually, the refuge will include 24,000 acres.
Access: Every day from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset.
Wild life: American woodcock and many other migratory bird species. Also Cheat Mountain salamander (threatened) and northern Virginia flying squirrel (endangered), turtles, snakes, bats.
