Chevage
Chevage
Chevage in medieval France, a small annual capitation paid by serfs as a token of their personal subordination. After the liberation of the peasantry in the 13th and 14th centuries, the chevage virtually disappeared. It survived only in a few eastern provinces that retained certain aspects of serfdom and were for the most part economically backward. In August 1789, during the French Revolution, the chevage was officially abolished without compensation. |
