Campus Martius
or Ager Martius, in ancient Rome a large lowland on the left bank of the Tiber River beyond the city boundary, where popular assemblies—comitia centuriata—took place. The area was named in honor of Mars, the god of war, since it was originally there that military reviews and competitions were held and the altar to Mars was situated.
By analogy with the Campus Martius in ancient Rome, the same name has been given in several other cities to squares (Champs de Mars in Paris and Marsovo pole in Leningrad), which have served as the site of military exercises and parades.
