DiscoglossidaeDiscoglossidae[¦dis·kō¦gläs·ə‚dē]Discoglossidaea family of Salientia (amphibians having no tails). They have no less than eight truncal vertebrae; the larvae have short ribs, which are also present in adults. The upper jaw has teeth; the tongue is round (hence the name) and unnotched; and the eyelids are well developed. There are four genera: Bombina, Discoglossus, Alytes, and Barbourula (eight species). Discoglossidae are distributed in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The genus Discoglossus includes one species, D. pictus, which is found in southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa. Aquatic representatives of the genus Barbourula are found in the Philippines; these Discoglossidae have webs between the digits of their limbs. Discoglossidae
