correlative water right

A theory of riparian rights—water rights—that holds an owner who has rights in a common source of water is entitled to take only a reasonable amount of water for the beneficial use of the land. Contrast with appropriative rights, in which the owner has the exclusive right to take all the water for the beneficial use of the land.
