[ble″o-mi´sin] an antitumor antibiotic obtained from cultures of Streptomyces verticellus. It binds to DNA and causes single-strand breaks and double-strand scissions, impairing DNA synthesis and inhibiting RNA and protein synthesis. Administered by injection as the sulfate salt to treat lymphomas, soft tissue sarcomas, and cancers of the head and neck, cervix, skin, testes, lung, and other organs.
