disciplinary procedure a set of rules governing the way managers should conduct investigations into infringements of company rules or unsatisfactory performance by employees. Generally disciplinary procedures require that employees be formally notified of the charge against them, have an opportunity to defend themselves (accompanied by a friend or TRADE UNION representative), be formally notified of any punishments, and have a right of appeal. If an employee is dismissed, failure to abide by such a procedure can lay a company open to a charge of UNFAIR DISMISSAL. See GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE. |
