Cherchen

(Chinese, Ch’iehmo), a city in Northwest China, in the southern part of the Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region, on the Ch’eerhch’en Ho. Population, approximately 15,000 (1957). Cherchen is a freight in-transit center on the North Kunlun Highway. Cottage industry includes the production of carpets and woolen and silk fabrics. Other industry includes the processing of livestock products and fruit products. Gold and marble deposits are found in the area.
