combinatorial biology

combinatorial biology

an approach involving the use of RECOMBINANT DNA techniques to manipulate organisms, such as BACTERIA and FUNGI, that produce complex natural products. The technology includes the creation of large libraries (with many different genetic combinations) of recombinant microorganisms that generate new organic molecules and the manipulation of metabolic pathways to modify valuable microbial metabolites. Combinatorial biology is providing opportunities in, for example, novel drug discovery. See also PHAGE DISPLAY LIBRARY.
