Location:On the eastern shore of Maryland, 12 miles south of Cambridge.
Facilities:Visitor center, trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, crabbing, hiking, biking, wildlife watching, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Before its designation as a refuge, the marshland along Blackwater River was used for trapping muskrats. Remains of old drainage ditches and furrows in some areas indicate past agricultural use.
Habitats: 27,000 acres of tidal marsh, open water, woodlands, agricultural areas, and freshwater impoundments.
Access: Open from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Canada geese, snow geese, mallard, pintail, American wigeon, and teal. The bald eagle and Delmarva fox squirrel are seen regularly, as is the peregrine falcon during the migratory season. Also nutria, white tail deer, bats, muskrats, skunks, skinks, turtles.
