Field, Stephen J.

Field, Stephen J. (Johnson)

(1816–99) Supreme Court justice; born in Haddam, Conn. (brother of David Dudley and Cyrus W. Field). He served on California's state legislature (1850–57) and supreme court (1857–63) before President Lincoln named him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1863–97). A staunch conservative, he frequently dissented from the court's majority opinion.
