coronary syndrome

coronary syndrome

A general term for any condition caused by disease of the coronary arteries, in particular ATHEROSCLEROSIS. The most important of these diseases are stable or unstable ANGINA PECTORIS and HEART ATTACK. An appreciation of coronary syndromes has gone well beyond that of simple mechanical blockage by an atheromatous plaque and overlying blood clotting. The plaque is now known to be a complex active entity containing, besides other ingredients, inflammatory cells, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. These components are in active communication with each other by way of CYTOKINE signalling systems. Chlamydial and other infections may also be involved in atherogenesis and plaque instability.
