Bates manoeuvres

Bates manoeuvres

A series of exercises which ophthalmologist WH Bates claimed would improve eyesight.
Bates manoeuvres
• Blinking—Lubricating the eye, ideally while taking a breath or reading.
• Near and far focusing—Holding a pencil or other object at 15 cm, then at arm’s length, and repeating the exercise 10–12 times.
• Palming—Using the palms to shut out all light to closed eyelids, for 5–10-minute periods, 2–3 times per day; at the same time the individual should remember and imagine coloors and scenes.
• Shifting—Shifting visual focus rather than stare at the same spot on an object.
• Splashing—Splashing the eyes directly with warm and cold water, about 10 times twice per day.
• Sunning—Facing the sun with closed eyes.
• Swinging—Swaying side to side about 100 times while staring at an object in middle distance.
