downstream

downstream

in or towards the lower part of a stream; with the current

downstream

[′dau̇n‚strēm] (chemical engineering) Portion of a product stream that has already passed through the system; that portion located after a specific process unit. (genetics) Further along in the direction of transcription on one strand of the deoxyribonucleic acid sequence of a gene; for a linked gene, downstream may be in the opposite direction along the chromosome. (hydrology) In the direction of flow, as a current or waterway.

downstream

upstream

downstream

From the provider to the customer. Downloading files and Web pages from the Internet is the downstream side. The upstream is from the customer to the provider (requesting a Web page, sending email, etc.). In cable TV, downstream signals are the network, movie and sports channels transmitted to the customer. However, if the cable provider offers video-on-demand or Internet access, the cable also has an upstream.

Not Symmetrical
Internet access speeds are typically not symmetrical, with the downstream rate being considerably faster than the upstream. The slower upstream prevents users from operating websites. For fast upstream Internet connections, the customer can sign a business-oriented service agreement, if available, or use specialized providers that accommodate datacenters and high-speed servers. See download and download vs. upload.

downstream

Cardiology The direction of blood flow, specifically in vessels flowing from the heart
Molecular biology A position on a molecule of interest—e.g., protein or DNA—that is ‘beyond’ or in front of a reference point; the term downstream differs according to the system involved

downstream

In genetics, at a stage in the sequence of processes in the expression of a gene that is nearer the final protein product than any stage in the direction of the DNA. The term is also used to mean in the direction of the 3'-end of a chain of bases in DNA (see PHOSPHODIESTER BOND). In both cases the opposite sense is called ‘upstream’.

downstream

(of a LOCUS on a DNA MOLECULE) relating to a position in the direction in which TRANSCRIPTION occurs, often after the transcription start site in DNA and towards the last coding region to be transcribed. By convention the DNA sequence of genes is shown from 5' (left) to 3' (right) so that ifX is on the 3' side of Y it is described as being downstream of Y. Compare UPSTREAM.

Downstream

Downstream

The transfer of corporate activity from the larger parent to the smaller subsidiary.

Downstream

In energy companies, relating to operations after production up to the point of sale. For example, an oil company's operations related to refining oil and selling gasoline to certain distributors are considered downstream. Some companies provide downstream operations exclusively, but most are integrated, providing both upstream and downstream operations.

downstream

Of or relating to earnings or operations at a firm that are near or at the final stage of consumption. For example, marketing and transportation are downstream operations for a large, integrated oil company. Compare upstream.
