Established: Authorized as International Memorial on August 18, 1941; redesignated on July 9, 1952; established on November 5, 1952.
Location:In southeastern Arizona along the border of the United States and Mexico, at the southern end of the Huachuca Mountains. From Phoenix or Tucson, take I-10 east and exit south on Hwy. 90 to Sierra Vista, then south on Hwy. 92 to Coronado Memorial Hwy.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Hiking, horseback riding, bird-watching, spelunking, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Our Hispanic heritage and the first European exploration of the Southwest by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (1540-1542) are commemorated here, near the point where Coronado's expedition entered what is now the United States. The memorial also preserves a wide array of plant and animal life native to the Southwest.
