Fergana Range
Fergana Range
a mountain range in the Tien-Shan, in the Kirghiz SSR. The Fergana Range forms the southwestern boundary of the Inner Tien-Shan, separating the Tien-Shan from the Fergana Basin. It is 225 km long and rises to an elevation of 4,692 m. The southwestern slope is long and gentle, and the northeastern slope is short and steep. The range is composed of shales, sandstones, limestones, and other sedimentary and metamorphic strata, which are intruded by gabbros and diabases. Glaciation occurs primarily in the southeast, where there are more than 150 glaciers. The total area of glaciation is approximately 125 sq km. Large walnut forests grow on the southwestern slopes; forests of dark conifers and junipers and subalpine and alpine meadows are found at higher elevations. There are coal deposits in the mountains and petroleum deposits in the foothills.
