During the height of the anti-communist "Red Scare" in the US, many authors, politicians, and public figures found their names in the government's black book.See also: black, bookblack book1. In 1536 the agents of King Henry VIII wrote in a black book the names of those to be censured or punished, specifically "sinful" English monasteries (whose lands Henry wanted to acquire).
